Revive the Miriam Mir Language
Meriam Mir Meets the Sea - Join Our Eco-Linguistic Collaboration 🌿🪸
In the heart of the Torres Strait, where Sea Country and language have been intertwined for thousands of years, a unique collaboration is taking shape. Guided by the wisdom of Elders and the depth of Meriam Mir—the language of Mer (Murray Island)—we are embarking on an eco-linguistic journey that unites cultural heritage with environmental stewardship.

This initiative is led by Elsa Day, working closely with respected Elders to protect, revitalise, and share Meriam Mir while restoring the ecosystems that sustain island life. Elsa has invited her long-standing linguist collaborator to join us in co-designing a program that weaves traditional language knowledge into ecological restoration practices.

Together, with other Elders, knowledge holders, and community mentors, we are shaping a cultural-scientific bridge—one that flows from Sea Country to classroom, from coastline to reef. Our shared goal is to inspire a new generation to care for both language and land, to restore biodiversity while ensuring Meriam Mir remains strong and vibrant.

We believe this work aligns perfectly with our shared expertise in ecology, conservation, and ecosystem training design. By joining forces, we can create pathways where cultural expression, linguistic heritage, and environmental science move forward together—strong as Beizam, and enduring as the tides.
