Project MERIT
(Mer Island anti-Erosion Revegetation and Integrated Training)
Project MERIT is a community-led initiative on Mer (Murray) Island that combines environmental restoration, skills training, and cultural reconnection to address the urgent challenge of coastal erosion.

The project focuses on revegetating eroded shorelines with native and culturally significant plants, restoring the natural resilience of the island’s coastline. Alongside hands-on restoration work, the program delivers integrated training in media production, environmental monitoring, and community engagement—equipping participants with both ecological and technical skills.

A key component of Project MERIT is the 10-day cinematography and media workshop, delivered with support from Georges Cameras, Sony Australia, and industry experts. This workshop trains community members in production setup, cinematography, and post-production, enabling them to document the project’s progress, share Meriam cultural knowledge, and raise awareness locally and internationally.

At its heart, Project MERIT empowers the Mer Island community to care for Sea Country, safeguard cultural heritage, and tell their own story—strengthening environmental resilience while building lasting local capacity.
